Treatment with fremanezumab, also known as AJOVY

The preparation 

Ajovy is specifically developed to prevent migraine and is approved for adults who have at least 4 attacks per month.

Mechanism of action 

It is known that CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide), which is produced in our nervous system, plays an active role in a migraine attack.

Ajovy works by binding specifically to and blocking the activity of the CGRP molecule in the brain. This can reduce the number and severity of your migraine attacks.

Ajovy has a half-life of approximately 30 days.

Side effects 

Injection site reaction, skin itching.

Precautions 

You should not use Ajovy if you have certain types of cardiovascular disease.

Ajovy must not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women. 

You must have stopped taking Ajovy for at least 5 months before trying to become pregnant.

Before starting treatment

Blood pressure is checked 

What is the dosage? 

You must inject 1 dose of 225 mg once every month (one pen). 

You can also choose to take 3 doses of Ajovy, which is 675 mg at once every 3 months. 

How is Ajovy administered?

We recommend that you take Ajovy out of the refrigerator about ½ hour before use.

Do NOT shake the Ajovy pen.

Ajovy can be injected into the upper arm, thigh, or abdomen. 

Check that the liquid in the pen is clear and free of sediment. Remove the cap from the pen and stretch or pinch the skin where you wish to inject. Place the pen at a 90-degree angle against the skin and press it all the way down. It is important that you maintain pressure for 5-10 seconds after the plunger in the window has reached the bottom and made a “click” sound. 

Storage

Ajovy can be transported home at a maximum of 30°C and must be placed in a refrigerator within 24 hours.

Ajovy must thereafter be stored in a refrigerator at 2-8°C, protected from light. Do not freeze.

Can be stored at room temperature of up to 30°C for up to 7 days before use. Any unused pens must then be discarded.
