What is medication-overuse headache (MOH)?

Medication-overuse headache occurs when frequent use of painkillers or migraine medication helps to maintain the headache.

This does not mean that the medication is wrong. On the contrary, the medication often starts as a necessary aid for headache or migraine. However, for some people, high consumption over time can cause the headache to become more persistent.

MOH is one of the most common causes of chronic headache and is seen in people with both migraine and other headache disorders.

How does the process work?

From the first consultation to follow-up, we are with you every step of the way. We tailor the process to your symptoms and continuously evaluate what makes the most sense for you.

1

Medical preliminary examination

We will assess your situation and determine whether medication overuse is playing a role in your symptoms.

2

Individual treatment plan

Together, we will create a plan for the next steps and any potential tapering off of medication.

3

Ongoing follow-up

You will be closely monitored by a doctor, neurologist, and nurse throughout the program.

4

Focus on the long term

We work not only with medication overuse but also with the long-term management of your headache or migraine.

What is the goal of the program?

The goal is not just to stop medication.

The goal is to reduce the portion of medication use that may be contributing to the persistence of headaches, while simultaneously working toward better symptom control and a higher quality of life.

For some patients, this also involves starting or optimizing preventive treatment, which can reduce the need for acute medication and make it easier to maintain improvements in the long term.

How to get started

All treatment plans for medication-overuse headache begin with a medical assessment.

Here, we will review, among other things:

  • Your medication use
  • Your headache history
  • Previous treatment attempts
  • Relevant treatment options

Based on the assessment, we will create a plan for your further treatment.

How extensive is a treatment plan?

There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Most patients have between 2 and 6 follow-up consultations as part of their treatment plan.

The number of consultations required depends on factors such as symptoms, medication use, and response to treatment. No fixed packages or long-term commitments.

We do not work with standard packages or a predetermined number of consultations. You only pay for the consultations you need.

If your treatment plan includes more than one consultation, you automatically receive a 20% discount compared to the list price.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop all medication overnight?

Not necessarily. The treatment is planned individually, and together we assess the approach that makes the most sense in your situation.

Can I take preventive medication at the same time?

Yes, for some patients, preventive treatment may be an important part of the plan. This is assessed during the medical examination and during the course.

How quickly can I expect results?

It varies from person to person. Some experience improvements relatively quickly, while others take longer to assess the effect of the treatment.

What if I get worse along the way?

It is not unusual for symptoms to change during drug detoxification. That is why we monitor you closely and help you assess the next steps along the way.

Can I contact you between consultations?

Yes. You have access to your therapists via chat throughout the entire process.

How much does a course of treatment for MOH cost?

You can see current prices on our price list.

How does the discount work?

If your course includes more than one consultation, you will automatically receive a 20% course discount compared to the list price. The course discount applies to a continuous course of treatment, where there is generally no more than 6 weeks between consultations.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly with Hemi.

Do I need to have a medical examination first?

Yes. All MOH courses start with a medical examination, where we assess your situation and make a plan for the further course.
